About oliver's fancy

I am wife to a patient husband named Ian and stay-at-home mom to a busy little boy named Oliver. When not running around after him, I enjoy dabbling in all sorts of craftiness. I am a self-proclaimed fabric-aholic and proud of it! I have started this blog to document my journey of bettering my sewing/ crafting skills and show off occasional pictures of my little man and superb culinary creations:).

All About Boys: My Favorite Patterns

I hope you enjoyed seeing how the three of us interpreted the 2 free patterns in different ways. I know I really enjoyed seeing what April and Heidi came up with! It’s so fun how the same pattern can look completely different with just a few adaptations. Make sure you check out Heidi’s second look she has featured today! (She outdid us all and made 2 separate outfits!) April has a pattern round-up for you as well today so I’m excited to see what she has to say.

To round out this week of boy sewing, I want to share some patterns with you. Today I’m sharing a list of my favorite boy patterns (though all of these patterns are in reality unisex so these could be used for girl sewing as well) that I’ve actually sewn and the corresponding outfits that I’ve made from them. I have them listed in order from easiest to hardest (in my opinion). The links on the pattern names will take you to the blog/online store where you can purchase them. If you click on the picture, you will be directed to the blog post where I wrote in detail about them. Tomorrow I’ll be back to share with you some new sewing patterns that I would like to try out this fall. Note: none of these are affiliate links in any way- just giving you my honest opinions. 🙂

KCW Spring 2014Flashback Skinny Tee– seriously y’all. My go-to t-shirt pattern. The end.

All About Boys: Modern Handmade

AAB logo

The last blogger I have to share with you this week is April from Modern Handmade. She made this seriously cute outfit for her little man- I mean hem tabs on the shorts. Why didn’t I think of that? Seriously gonna use that idea ASAP! And she made SHOES! She has inspired me to finally try to recreate some shoes of my own- something I’ve been putting off doing for a while. Make sure you head over to her blog and get all the details on her outfit. And check out more pics of Mr H while you are there. What a cutie!

photo 2I’ll be back tomorrow to share with you some of my favorite patterns for boy clothing to give you a little more inspiration to sew some fun things for your own boys!

All About Boys: Picnic at the Park

AAB logo

Welcome to my stop on the all about boys week. For my destination, I wanted to make an outfit suitable for a summer evening picnic at the park. We have a great little downtown here in my town and spend a lot of summer evenings walking around the park and biking along the trails. We happened to remember this really cool Rock Quarry Garden near downtown that would be perfect for the photo shoot!

As mentioned previously, the goal for this week was to show you different outfits you can make using 2 free patterns: Dana’s basic tee and Oliver+S Sunny Day shorts. Continue reading

All About Boys: Handmade Frenzy

Just popping in today to point you over to my friend Heidi at Handmade Frenzy where she has our first All About Boys post up and ready for your viewing pleasure! I love what she did with the freezer paper stenciled popsicle! And how great are those stripes?! Head over here to read it! And then you’ll probably have to go get yourself some ice cream because she’s got some drool-worthy shots of that yummy cone!

All About Boys: Coming soon to a blog near you…

AAB logoA few weeks ago a few IG friends and I were chatting about how sad it was that there were all these cute, adorable things for girls and sometimes boys get left out in the cold. If you’ve been around here for any length of time you’ve probably heard me rant about that sometime or other. 🙂 But really, it does seem like girls get a lot of the fun. So we decided to change that up a bit. We are starting a little series called All About Boys- where we take a week and showcase some extra cool boy projects. This time we decided to place an emphasis on free patterns because many people want to sew for their kids but don’t know where to begin. Free patterns are a great way to get your feet wet without breaking the bank. We will be using Continue reading

Waterfall Maxi Dress

new maxi (1 of 4)

I am beyond excited to share this dress with you today. See I’ve been wanting a maxi dress for, like, ever. 😉 Unfortunately due to my height and figure it’s really hard to find one that’s flattering on me. (I have a very wide torso and am basically straight down with no waist definition at all- kinda the opposite of an hourglass) I’ve been thinking it would be fun to try to make my own maxi but couldn’t settle upon the perfect pattern for it. Sometime after making my waterfall tank– pattern by Sew Caroline, I realized that with some tweaks I could make that into a maxi dress pattern. But then I realized I needed some major fabric yardage to make this idea into a reality. Enter my Liberty of London for Target dress that  I thrifted over 4 years ago!! (yeah sometimes it takes me a while to get around to things-lolz) I found this dress at a Goodwill (along with a sweet Liberty of London tie for the hubs) and even though it was several sizes too large and had a weird off the shoulder thing going on, I knew I had to have it if just for the fabric. When I brought it home, I attempted some revisions on it, but they didn’t work out and it’s sat in my mending bin ever since.

I’m glad I waited to use the dress because it was perfect for this pattern. First off, I took the tank pattern and added about 25 inches to it- starting with the size M on top and angling out several inches to a nice A-line shape at the bottom. Then I took my dress and carefully

Maritime Shorts: Blast from the Past

Note: Happy fourth of July to all my American friends! I’ve been trying to get this post published for several days but just now finally was able to finish it up. Sorry that it’s not super festive for this holiday weekend. I did actually manage to pull together some matching patriotic tanks for the boys (finished this morning-lol) but you’ll have to wait until next week to see those!maritime shorts- new pics (1 of 2)

So this pair of shorts is actually from last summer and never got blogged…because they just now fit! I made this pair of maritime shorts as my wearable muslin version, and I think I was dreaming about the reality of my after-baby body and they ended up being way too small. Yeah, oops. Well anyway I am happy to report that they do, indeed (mostly) fit me now as long as I haven’t eaten too much ice cream the day before. 😉

Waterfall Tank

I got to be a tester for another one of Caroline’s patterns: the Waterfall Tank. (releasing Monday!) This was my first time using rayon challis and I think I might be hooked. It has such a great drape to it- perfect for garments. It is a bit fiddly to sew with so you have to be careful when you cut it out but other than that, its not too bad. I got this particular rayon challis at Wanderlust Fabrics (out of stock right now 😦 ). I just recently discovered them and highly recommend them as a good resource for knits and rayon fabrics. The quality is great, and they will even send you samples upon request so you can see the fabrics before you buy. I got two other knit fabrics with my order and am looking forward to putting them to good use in the near future.

Handmade Birthday Club: Distorted Triangles Mini Quilt

My next handmade birthday gift (see previous one here) is to Jeni in Canada. (@quiltedontherock). She finally got it after two weeks in the mail so I can share it with y’all here. Jeni said that she loved black & white with pops of color, text prints, and mini piecing. I decided to make her a mini quilt based off this pin that I found. I used my text bundle that I won from Pink Castle Fabric’s IG giveaway and then some fabrics from my stash to make the loose rainbow running down the mini.

new final (2 of 2)

Sooo I wanted to make a triangle quilt, but so far all I’ve ever done is half-square triangles. I looked up some tutorials on pinterest (you can check out my quilt board here) and then made up my own triangle template based on what I thought would be a good size. I think I should have researched it a little more before jumping into it. Somehow I messed something up because I ended up with pointless triangles. See what I meant in my last post about the maths not working out for me most of the time? I almost scrapped the project after the first row but I’d already cut out all the triangles so I just continued with it and figured I’d see if it looked better all put together. Once I got it finished up, it kinda grew on me and I decided it was kinda of a cool look. Hopefully Jeni agrees!

Jeni's Triangle Mini Quilt (1 of 3)

FYI I starched and ironed all the triangles after I cut them out and it made the sewing process much easier! I used my walking foot and quilted it 1/4” on either side of the horizontal rows and then random widths of straight lines going down the vertical length of the quilt . I used the same black sketch print for both the backing and binding.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what I did wrong, please feel free to weigh in. I almost didn’t publish this post because it shows an imperfect project but I think it’s important to show our flaws as well as our successes. Keepin’ it real here, folks!

Quilted Laptop Sleeve

samples (13 of 13)

There’s been lots of behind-the-scene sewing happening here this week that I am hoping to get to share with you soon! Husband is out of town for the week on a mission’s trip and while single parenting is hard stuff, there is a plus side in that I have nothing else to do all evening after the boys go to bed but sew. 🙂 Oh and watch Call the Midwife. Anyone else loving that show? I signed up for a free month of Netflix solely to binge watch it this week.
Anywho check out my new laptop sleeve- loving it! And v. proud of self because I did all the maths for the dimensions and they worked out perfectly. If you know me, you will understand why that is such an exciting thing. Math and Me- not usually friends.

macbook caseI used the ipad cover tutorial over at One Shabby Chick to get an idea for the construction, then tweaked the dimensions to fit my 13” macbook air laptop. I did not do the flap at the top that she suggests. The case has a two layers of batting (one on exterior and one on interior fabric) and interfacing on the exterior fabric so it is a nice, sturdy sleeve. I also did straight line quilting on the exterior pieces to keep the fabrics in place.

samples (10 of 13)Exterior fabric is a Flea Market Fancy print and interior is a Lizzy House print that I’ve been hoarding for a while. It’s a fun pop of color for the inside! Also check out the Lizzy House Gelaskin that I got for the laptop. If you follow my IG (@oliversfancy) you saw that I was being very indecisive about which one to buy but I ended up with this Lizzy House and am pretty happy about it. In my experience LH is always the correct answer 🙂 I’m happy to finally have something to keep my laptop safe and sound!
