About oliver's fancy

I am wife to a patient husband named Ian and stay-at-home mom to a busy little boy named Oliver. When not running around after him, I enjoy dabbling in all sorts of craftiness. I am a self-proclaimed fabric-aholic and proud of it! I have started this blog to document my journey of bettering my sewing/ crafting skills and show off occasional pictures of my little man and superb culinary creations:).

Art Museum Shorts and some Bow-ties

art museum shorts (6 of 10)

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably noticed that my sister got married this weekend. As my two boys are her only nephews, she wanted to have them be the ringbearers in her wedding. These two adore their auntie and are so sad that she is moving away- but the lego sets she got them as a reward for walking successfully down the aisle are soothing their wounds. 😉

FYI all these photos were taken with my iPhone as quick wedding snaps…And sorry about the overload of pictures. I just need a place to show off all of this cuteness!

art museum shorts (4 of 10)

My sister wanted a traditional Southern look for the boys’ outfits- seersucker, bowties, suspenders (which I picked up on amazon btw), boat shoes…basically the southern prep that is so not my typical style. But on a 2 and 5 year old anything can be cute so I was up for whatever she wanted.

art museum shorts (2 of 10)

I gave her several pattern options for the shorts and she picked out the Oliver+S Art Museum Trousers. I made a pair for Oliver for Easter last year and they are still plenty big in the waist so I stuck with the size 3 for him. I actually made Eliot a size 3 also. He’s still in a diaper and so has some extra chunk around the middle. It was super nice not to have to trace another size with all those pattern pieces involved!

art museum shorts (9 of 10)In order to make the trousers into shorts, I just cut off the pants about 6 inches from the hem when I was cutting them out and then tried them on the boys once they were sewn together to measure for the exact hem length.art museum shorts (3 of 10)I must admit to not being a huge welt pocket fan…I mean they look nice and all but they’re a lot of work for a little boy’s outfit. I made Oliver’s shorts with the actual welts, but Eliot’s shorts are fake pockets…and I don’t regret that move one bit! Now if I hadn’t made him his front pockets, he might have been rebelling on me. 🙂 See below picture for proof of his love of pockets.

The seersucker is a tan/white blend that I picked up at Five-Eighths Seams on a trip to Charleston last fall. If you ever are in need of seersucker, they’ve got it in almost every color combination possible! I was pretty relieved to find it in person so I knew it was the color I was looking for.

art museum shorts (7 of 10)Now on to the bow ties… I made some bow ties a long time ago when Oliver was in his Aunt Katie’s wedding. But I made legit tying bow ties that time and they were such a pain to keep tied on little boys. I remembered that I had seen Jane post a bow tie she made for Henry that looked about right so I went searching on her blog and found it here… with a link to the tutorial here

art museum shorts (5 of 10)

The only change I made to the bow tie tutorial was to use some SF 101 in place of felt or fleece. I am super happy with how well these turned out! The bow was the exact stiffness that I wanted and the velcro closure in the back made it easy to get on and off the boys! The fabric is Kona peach which I ordered from fabric.com and it happened to match the bridesmaids peach dresses exactly. Woot woot!

The boys did an awesome job walking down the aisle and quite stole the show with their cuteness!! I just love how great these outfits turned out and hope they will get some more use out of them as church clothes this summer.

Safari Raglan- Dinosaur Style

dinosaur safari raglan (5 of 7)

Ok, so I may be overusing this safari raglan pattern but it’s just such a quick and easy sewing project that I can’t resist! I’ve been in the middle of a sewing slump- mainly because I have some projects I HAVE to get done for my sister’s upcoming wedding and have been putting them off… Yeah I’m so bad about finishing those kind of things. It’s the welt pockets, y’all. Gotta make a pair of welt pocket shorts and I’m just not feeling the love right now!

dinosaur safari raglan (4 of 7)

This past weekend, I wanted to push through the slump by sewing some thing completely for fun. I got this Lizzy House dinosaur knit from Rachael a few months ago- I think I bought the very last bit that she had in stock! I knew the boys would love this fabric but hadn’t decided exactly what to do with it yet.

dinosaur safari raglan (2 of 7)

A raglan tee seemed like the perfect way to show off this print. I paired the dinos with some laguna jersey in navy. (you know me and my laguna love. 😉 ) Like I mentioned, I used the safari raglan by titchy threads. I used the same mods as I did for the swamp rabbit raglans I made for the boys this winter- sewing up the size 2 but moving the center fold over 1/8″ to add a little width and adding 1/2″ in length to the bottom. One of these days, I’ll just go ahead and trace out the 3 and stop being lazy!

dinosaur safari raglan (6 of 7)

I wanted these to be short sleeved and I didn’t have the short sleeve option for the pattern printed out, so I just eyed it and chopped the sleeve off around where I thought it should be. They turned out more elbow length than short sleeve, but I kinda love the elbow length so I think I’m going to leave them as-is.

dinosaur safari raglan (3 of 7)

I had planned to hem the sleeves and bottom hem but decided I was too lazy and just left them to roll up. They look so cute all rolled up naturally so I’m calling it a  design feature.

Oh and those shorts are some I made for Oliver waaayyy long time ago. They’re a little short for Eliot now and I love seeing his little knobby toddler knees hanging out of them. No way am I letting that hem out and getting rid of that cuteness.

dinosaur safari raglan (1 of 7)

I did make a tee for Oliver too. I was going to make his a little different than Eliot’s but he liked Eliot’s so much that we just did an exact copy. Hey, he asked for it! Gotta encourage the matching while it lasts. 😉

12917784_1719345668339948_556771109_nOliver didn’t end up in the pictures because he’s not feeling well today but here the IG picture from the other day so you can see his. FYI he requested to take the picture in front of the quilt ladder because “it would look all colorful.” Love getting his input now. It’s so cute.

Valentine’s Mini Quilts

mug rug and runner (2 of 6)I’ve been struggling with my sew-jo the last few weeks and just have not had the drive to tackle all the projects spinning in my head. All last week I wanted to make some more valentines decor but just couldn’t decide what I wanted to do. Finally this week, I got a little inspiration and whipped up these two little mini quilts and I’m so happy with them!

mug rug and runner (3 of 6)This first mini is a table runner for my dining room table. I had some leftover valentine-ish fabric from when I used to sell baby onesies and wanted to use it to make a heart runner. I just did not have the patience or brain space to figure out how to piece this to make a legit heart runner so I totally just appliquéd the hearts onto some white Kona. Easy peasy! Then I had some fun with the quilting and decided to try to free motion some hearts in my loop-de-loop. It’s definitely messy but I kinda love how it turned out! Lots of pink and white and red all meshed together…perfect for some cheerful decorations.

mug rug and runner (1 of 6)I had a little bit of the arrow fabric left so I appliquéd two more hearts onto a smaller white square and ended up with this little mug rug. Since there’s less white space on this mini, I decided to stick with some straight line quilting in coordinating thread. I was afraid it would look too busy otherwise. I don’t have a lot of decorations out on my coffee and side tables in my living room because kids. (need I say more?), but I have started keeping some seasonal mug rugs out and I love how they brighten up the room and add a little something special. Plus I love to drink my tea so they are actually quite handy for my mugs!

mug rug and runner (4 of 6)Now that I’ve got these sewn up so quickly, I’m wondering why I dragged my feet all last week on these projects! I know not everyone decorates for Valentine’s Day, but I can’t resist a chance to be cheesy and I do think hearts everywhere just brighten up a room! Plus Oliver is now used to my decorating and asked why we didn’t have Valentines stuff up last week…that kid is getting way too observant!

mug rug and runner (5 of 6)This won’t get too much use this year as it’s so close to the actual holiday, but now I’ll have some stuff ready to put out next year when February rolls around! And I may just leave it up till the end of the month…just because I can. 🙂 mug rug and runner (6 of 6)

Swamp Rabbit Raglans

swamp rabbit raglans (3 of 5)

A few weeks ago we took the boys to our little downtown outdoor ice skating rink that opens every holiday season. It just so happened to be the night that the local hockey team had some players there to skate with the crowd and the boys charmed the manager into giving them some hockey tees. Of course the only size the guy had with him were men’s Larges but he thought the boys might like the tees anyway… Lucky for them, this mama knows how to sew. 😉

swamp rabbit raglans (1 of 5)

I used the safari raglan pattern and centered the pattern pieces over the graphic print. I was a little worried that the print would be too big to fit on Eliot’s shirt but thank goodness, it fit just perfectly! I’ve sewed this pattern so many times, I didn’t even need to look at the instructions while I was making the shirts- just used the pattern pieces and whipped them up. I do so love a quick and easy project like this!

swamp rabbit raglans (2 of 5)

I used some laguna jersey in my stash to accent the tees- navy for Eliot and brown for Oliver. The tees are sizes 2&4 with a few mods…I moved over the center fold about 1/8″ to give a little more width and also added 1/2″ to the shirt hem and 1/4″ to the sleeve hems. I wanted these to be big enough to wear next year too but not too overly big right now. I think they turned out just about right. Oliver’s sleeves are a teeny bit short but I’m just going to add a cuff to them and they will be fine…especially easy to do since i was super lazy and didn’t hem the sleeves or shirt hem. 🙂

swamp rabbit raglans (4 of 5)The boys were so super excited to wear their new shirts and have worn them several times since I finished them last week. I love being able to give them little custom things like this…part of what makes sewing so fun. And we may have never been to a hockey game, but the boys can represent our local team with pride now in their new shirts. 😉 Also Oliver is going through a difficult photography stage- ugh. He’s really in love with his shirt but did not want to smile for the camera…goober. Oh well. Guess I’ll have to work on my photo bribery skills for next time!

Mini Hudson Pants: the workout edition

lycra terry wickaway hudsons (5 of 5)

I first discovered this fabric because Rachael sent me a bit to try out. It was just so soft and squishy I knew that I needed more!! I promptly ordered yardage to make hudson pants for the lot of us, plus a running sweatshirt for me (more on that very soon!). The fabric is a terry-backed lycra wickaway. (Main fabric is the piston green color way.) It works really well for exercising in so if you’re needing some cold weather exercise clothes, you’ve gotta try this! I know it’s kinda silly to make clothes for the boys out of the wickaway but it was so cute that I couldn’t resist. Hey, they get sweaty playing too! Plus Eliot is in love with “comfy pants” and so I knew he would love these.

lycra terry wickaway hudsons (2 of 5)

I would like to point out that I actually bought this particular color for Eliot and an orange colorway for Oliver but when I went to make O’s, he decided he wanted to match his brother and I managed to have enough of the green to make two pairs. (The fabric is crazy wide!). So I didn’t set out to do the matchy-matchy thing…It just kinda happened.

lycra terry wickaway hudsons (4 of 5)

I seem to be the last person in the sewing universe who has yet to make mini hudsons for their kids. I’ve been dying to make the boys some, but just hadn’t had the time yet. And now that I finally got around to it I give it two thumbs up. Love it! Super quick and easy especially if you use the serger. I made the boys a size 3 and 5….Eliot’s fit great but Oliver’s are kinda big. Which is fine because he will grow into them but I think next time I’ll make his skinny self a 4…

lycra terry wickaway hudsons (3 of 5)

And yeah, I could not get any good pictures of the boys together! They were being such goobers but it was so cold outside that I didn’t want to force them to stay outside too long. Headless shots are better than yucky indoor lighting. Also well aware Eliot’s shirt doesn’t match… #realkidsrealclothes, y’all… He’s even wearing his brother snow boots to complete his crazy get-up…Kids. But when he asks in his cute little voice to wear “the comfy pants you made me,” I’ll let him wear whatever he wants with them. He’s a good schmoozer that one.

A Very Grinchy Christmas Quilt

So I have a confession to make. This quilt was finished last year. Which at this point, I’m wondering if I should even blog about it but I do love to have an online record of my projects. And since I actually managed to get a few pictures of it when I took the boys Christmas pj pics, I figured I’d throw it up here.

grinch quilt (2 of 6)

I bought the main panel piece along with the first border print several years ago and had been hoarding it until I could figure out what to do with it. Last year, I decided I would finally cut into it and make a quilt. I happened to run into hobby lobby and see that they had the Santa Grinch print that you see in the backing and outer border, grabbed a few yards of it, and started planning my layout.

grinch quilt (6 of 6)I cut apart the panel pieces and arranged them in a 3×3 rectangle of blocks. I added some white kona cotton as necessary to even the blocks out. I was really trying not to spend any more money on fabric so I used the two green Grinch prints that I had to border the quilt. In retrospect, the two greens together are a little too busy and I wish I would have spent a little more time and money to put a border between them . Especially for something like a quilt that’s going to last a long time, I have learned it’s not worth it to make something I’m 100% happy with.

grinch quilt (5 of 6)I didn’t have quite enough of the Santa Grinch print for the backing so I used a red and white stripe print from my stash to complete the back. I do so love the little pop those stripes give it. For the binding, I just used a pre-made red binding….which I would not recommend! It bled all over the white spots in the quilt and I had to do a lot of re-washing and sun-bleaching to get the red stains out. Thankfully they did eventually come out.

grinch quilt (4 of 6)The quilting is just a basic stippling in gray. Love the texture a stipple quilting pattern gives without taking away from the main focus of the quilt.

The boys love this quilt so much so even though it’s got a few things I wish I would have done differently, I’m glad they are happy. It’s so fun to see them lay it out in the living room floor and check out all the Grinch’s and Who’s. They love the old version of the Grinch movie and get so excited to “read” the story through the quilt panels. And, you know, I love any chance to encourage a love of Dr. Seuss. 🙂

A Very Cotton+Steel Christmas

I saw someone on Instagram several months ago post a picture of the new cotton+steel Tinsel Christmas collection and I knew that had to be our Christmas pjs this year. I’m trying to make yearly handmade Christmas Eve pjs a thing. I’ve been pretty good at getting the boys’ pjs made the past few years but not so good at adult versions. This is the year I’m going to do it all! 😉 So far, so good since I have the boys pjs completely finished and it’s not even mid-December. Who is this person I’m becoming? Never fear my Christmas sewing list is a mile long and I’ll be sewing well into the wee hours of Christmas eve to finish it all!

Anywho, back to the pjs. I picked up the fabric at Fabricworm a month or so ago using a gift card I’d been saving and got my favorite prints out of the line. I knew the boys had to have this snow globe fabric. I mean, it’s just too cool that several of the places they’ve been in the last year and a half (Paris, San Fransisco…) are pictured in the globes! They got to decide which color they each wanted and thankfully there was no fighting over that! Though they were complete goobers during the photo shoot and so ended up getting their heads cut out of half of the pictures because they were just ridiculous faces.

Here’s the specs on their outfits:

Eliot:

  • Pants: Parsley Pants. Size 4. (sized up because of cloth diaper bulk.) Quilting cotton. No mods except cuffing up the hem for length.
  • Shirt: Safari Raglan. Size 2. Laguna Jersey in Onyx for sleeves. Thermal Waffle Knit for main body. Both from Imagine Gnats. The reindeer head is a freezer paper stencil.

Oliver:

  • Pants: Parsley Pants. Size 5. Flannel. Mods- widened the waistband from 1.5″ to 1.75″ to accommodate the 1.5″ wide elastic I had in stock.
  • Shirt: Old Navy (Oliver had this shirt in his closet and since it matched his pjs perfectly, it didn’t make sense to make him another one. Plus I used up the rest of my waffle knit on Eliot’s tee) . Added the reindeer freezer paper stencil in silver glitter paint.

christmas pjs (7 of 7)The stencil didn’t turn out exactly as I had planned but overall I think their Christmas pjs are really cute. And they’re happy so that’s really what matters. Now the hard part is to keep them put away until Christmas Eve! And of course get busy sewing mine and the hubby’s pair. But, I almost forgot, if you check out my latest Imagine Gnat’s post, you’ll see I already have my shirt finished and it uses the same waffle knit that Eliot’s has! christmas pjs (6 of 7)

Hawthorn+Rowan Sweatshirt Hack

hawthorn-rowan hack (3 of 6)

I bought the Hawthorn pattern a long time ago and have been wanting to try it out for so long, but kept putting it off. Bigger projects like this take a while for me to get psyched up for because the time commitment is more than just a simple t-shirt. I was finally motivated to get to it when I realized Oliver didn’t have any simple zip-down hoodies for this fall.

hawthorn-rowan hack (1 of 6)The Hawthorn comes with two options- a full zip or half zip sweatshirt with a collar. I really wanted to make a hoodie so I figured I would see if the hood from the Rowan tee fit the Hawthorn neckline- spoiler alert: it does!

hawthorn-rowan hack (4 of 6)

I thought I’d give a basic recap for any of you who are interested in replicating this hack yourselves:

  • Constructed both pieces separately- size 4 for both.
  • Made the hood exactly as instructed except for the final step where you sew the front corners together.
  • For the jacket, I left out all the steps concerning the collar construction.
  • I did attach the front facing pieces to the zipper and just moved them down to start at the top neckline of the jacket since there was no collar for them to attach to.
  • Then I just sewed the hood to the jacket matching up the front and back middle points of each. I did end up seam ripping the front facing at the very top so that I could sandwich the hood between the main jacket and facing piece when sewing them together.
  • Finally I used the same twill tape from the rim of the hood to cover up the jacket/hood neckline seam- making it look very professional!

hawthorn-rowan hack (5 of 6)And presto- everything lined up perfectly and the jacket turned out so nice! Happy, happy dance!! I am so, so pumped at how awesome this looks. You know I’m a huge fan of Laura’s patterns anyway so I had high hopes that this hack would work out, but it turned out even better than I had anticipated!

hawthorn-rowan hack (2 of 6)

It did take me two weeks to finish this jacket because I was having some major brain lapses while sewing and would have to put it down and come back later. I’m just not used to sewing more complicated patterns with all the multiple facings pieces and such. But every time I would come back after a break, whatever I was struggling with would finally make sense and I’d move forward a bit. Next time I go to make this, I think it will come together super quickly since I’ve got the instructions all figured out now.

hawthorn-rowan hack (6 of 6)

My fabric is this yummy french terry from Imagine Gnats shop. I used the wrong side for the pockets and inner hood. She’s out of this color but here it is in a lighter gray colorway. I’ve slowly been buying up more and more of her french terry fabrics. It’s just so perfect for cozy fall and winter garment sewing. Oliver and I perused her website to pick out exactly which french terry he wanted for this jacket. He didn’t seem super impressed when the fabric came in the mail, but once I sewed it up and he tried it on, he loved it and is always grabbing his “cozy jacket” now when we head outside.

Linden Take 2: The Triangle Version

triangle linden (4 of 5)

Yep, you read it correctly. Here I come again with another Linden. If you’ve followed me for any amount of time you might have seen this as a common theme. Once I find an easy pattern for either me or the boys, I tend to make several in a row while I’ve got the pattern pieces out and instructions fresh in my mind.

triangle linden (1 of 5)I bought several different Leah Duncan knits from Rachael’s shop back during a sale this summer (FYI for anyone reading in real time, she’s currently having another knits sale!!). I have always loved Leah Duncan’s fabric lines and was so excited when she came out with some knits too! One I used to make a short sleeve Union St. Tee that I love and get so many compliments on when I wear it…and I just realized that I never blogged it. Oops. Maybe I can get a few pics of it before it’s too cold. Because it really it so cute. Anyway, I have been saving this one for just the right project and after my cattitude Linden turned out so well, I thought I’d try it again.

triangle linden (3 of 5)I just so happened to have the perfect navy laguna knit in my stash to coordinate- justifying my stockpile immensely 😉 , and so I used that for the sleeves and neck binding. I made the size 6 per usual. I did make one mistake that kinda bums me out. I forgot to add the 1/2″ length to the bottom like I did with the previous version. So it still fits fine but that extra bit of length takes it to the perfection level. Oh well, next time I will remember! And I’ll just wear a tank top under this one so that it doesn’t bug me with pulling the hem down all the time.

triangle linden (2 of 5)

That’s actually why I liked blogging. I mean I love the sewing community and friends I have made through it all that but I also love having a journal of sorts of my sewing journey. I’m bad about making notes on my patterns, so when I go to make something for the second or third time, I usually pull up my blog post where I wrote about it and read over my modifications and changes I thought the pattern needed. It’s been super helpful! I neglected to blog about quite a few things last winter and I’ve had to work really hard to remember the changes I made last year as I come back to the patterns again this fall.

And one more thing- photo props to the 4.5 year old. I had some time where we were hanging out outside with not much to do, so I bribed him to take a few pics so I could throw this post up. Not too bad for his age, I think! We will keep working on his skills. 🙂

A Linden with Cattitude

crazy cat linden (5 of 5)So this is actually my third Linden. Yep, I have two others that I wear all the time but haven’t gotten around to blogging. Oops. I have wanted some of this Lizzy House cat fabric since I saw it released. It just looked like the perfect choice for a Linden. I mean, who doesn’t want a crazy cat lady sweatshirt? Funny part of this is that I have never actually owned a cat. But I always wanted to as a child so I guess this is my way of getting my cat fix.crazy cat linden (2 of 5)The pattern is the wonderful Linden from Grainline Studios. I bought the paper pattern during her online Black Friday sale last year- FYI fabric and pattern sales are the only Black Friday shopping I do…cannot resist those deals and a chance to support independent shops. The paper pattern instructions came in this adorable little booklet that was quite fun to use. I’m hoping she runs another Black Friday sale this year because I want to buy some of her latest patterns. I’m so taking paper patterns over PDFs if I get that option right now. Burnt out on cutting and taping! crazy cat linden (4 of 5)Anywho, moving on. I made the size 6 with just a small modification of adding 1/2″ to the length of the body. My others were just a teeny bit shorter than I liked and that extra 1/2″ makes it perfect for me. I love how different the shirt fits in this lighter weight jersey. It has an awesome drape and is the perfect weight for cooler fall days that don’t need a jacket yet. It’s got the oversized-coziness of a sweatshirt with the lightweight recovery of a t-shirt. Kind of the best of both worlds. crazy cat linden (3 of 5)

Fabric is from Imagine Gnats shop. She’s out of this print right now but does have a few other Lizzy knits here. I have some more yardage of the purple butterflies that I may used for another Linden… we shall see. Definitely recommend the quality of these knits. And I have to say, this is seriously the quickest sew! I think I cut and sewed it in less than an hour! Perfect instant gratification project. And no hems. Can I get a woot, woot for that?! I’ll leave you with my two little photo bombers who had to jump into the pictures because they’re just little picture hogs now. But cute ones, no? crazy cat linden (1 of 5)
